Strategic Planning
Starting Your Strategic Planning Process
In this 2.5-hour workshop, we’ll prepare you for strategic planning by assessing readiness, discussing options and identifying your organization’s process. The committee will begin to identify and discuss some of the strategic issues facing your organization, and use that information to determine which key stakeholders to engage in your planning activities, and how. The result will be a “map” for your strategic planning process.
Prioritizing Your Strategic Issues
We’ll spend this 2-hour workshop looking closely at your organization’s strengths and weaknesses, and the opportunities and threats that it faces. Then, we’ll analyze these discoveries in order to determine a prioritized list of strategies for programs and organizational development that will apply to the next 3+ years.
Mission, Vision, and Values
This 2.5-hour workshop is ideal for refining existing statements or for starting from scratch. We’ll begin by talking about the value and significance of mission, vision and values statements. Next, we’ll look closely at your organization in order to generate language that best describes your mission (core purpose and activities), your vision (the future you’ll create by pursuing your mission) and your values (ethos of operation). Finally, we’ll whittle down all of this language toward clear and succinct mission, vision and values statements.
Roadmap to Organizational Success
In this 6-8 week process, we’ll dig swiftly and deeply into the internal and external issues facing your organization, producing a clear plan for how to move forward that includes goals, an action plan and outcomes measurements. A selection of people who hold a stake in your organization will first complete an online assessment. Then, a small committee representing those diverse stakeholders will engage in two 2.5-hour workshops to explore the issues and complete the plan.
Board Development
Recruiting Board Members
We’ll kick off this 2-hour workshop by discussing the role of a board of directors and how you feel additional members could improve your board’s ability to support your organization. After making a detailed list of what kinds of roles you’d like to fill, and individuals in the community who might fill them, we’ll create a plan for recruitment and discuss recruiting techniques.
Fundamentals of Board Governance
This 3-hour workshop gives your board of directors – whether seasoned members or new recruits – a comprehensive overview of their essential governance functions. We’ll review the typical roles and responsibilities of a board of directors, with specific focus on each of its three fundamental jobs: financial oversight, fund development and strategic planning.
Fundraising
Expanding Your Donor Base
What are best practices for cultivating individual donors? How can you organize your year so you reach donors at the right time and in the right ways? How can you set accurate dollar projections for each individual donor appeal, to meet overall fundraising goals? What are some proven tactics for making asks? In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll cover these essential aspects of raising support from individuals.
Grants Basics
In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll cover the most important aspects of securing grants. We’ll offer tips on reading funder guidelines in order to isolate the best funding sources for your organization, and how you can organize that knowledge into your own grants plan for the year. We’ll also discuss basic strategies for crafting a strong proposal.
Making the Ask: Fundraising for Organizational Leaders
In this 2-hour workshop, top-level staff and board members (or other key organizational “decision-makers”) will train on ways to effectively and comfortably ask for donations, including how to approach donors and how to maintain relationships with them.
Finance
Basic Financial Reports and Planning for Organizational Leadership
In this 1.5-hour workshop, board members and/or top-level staff will learn how to read your organization’s financial documents, including profit and loss/activities sheets and balance sheets. We’ll also discuss the fundamentals of long-term financial planning, cash flow projections, and reporting requirements specific to your organization.
